Gloom or Shine

“Proactive people can carry their own weather with them. Whether it rains or shines makes no difference to them. They are value driven; and if their value is to produce good quality work, it isn’t a function of whether the weather is conducive to it or not.” ~ 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

It seems like every paragraph in this section is just full of golden nuggets. There are a lot of people that are totally affected by the weather. I have heard that the suicide rate in states like Oregon and Washington are higher because the weather is gloomy more often than in other areas of the country. The gloom brings depression into people’s hearts and they act on it more often by just ending it all. How many of us commit corporate suicide on a daily basis because the financial climate is gloomy more often than we are comfortable with? Are we value driven or climate driven? Does a poor month define our year or do our values? Are we being reactive and expecting a gloomy month to follow or are we proactive and making the choices and changes we need to in order to improve the next months weather?

Have you noticed how often the weather forecasters are incorrect? How many times have you seen them call for gloomy skies yet go outside to see nothing but blue? You can choose to listen to them regardless of the evidence to the contrary and dress up in your full rain gear but that would be foolish. Sometimes the evidence even points to the forecast being correct. But just before the storm starts it clears and the rest of the day is beautiful. I understand that there are times when the forecast is correct and it would be foolish to go out in flip-flops and a tank top in a hurricane but the point here is that in our lives, outside of the natural realm, we have the choice to walk in gloom or clear skies. The forecast may look bleak but are our hearts, minds and spirits? We have the power to choose how our day goes without regard to outside influences. There will be storms in business and in life, that is unavoidable. What is avoidable is us allowing those storms to dictate who we are and how well we will perform and produce each day. If we sow good seed even in the days where all seems lost we will reap a harvest beyond anything that we could ever hope for or imagine.

God bless you.
